North Canberra Hospital wards

Visiting hours are at the following times every day:

  • 11am to 1pm
  • 3pm to 8pm

In the Acacia Unit (Adult Mental Health) visiting arrangements and leave programs are negotiated between each patient/family and their clinicians.

If these times are not suitable, please speak with us to make other arrangements.

We will let you know when someone is here to visit you.

You have the right to refuse a visitor. If you refuse a visit and your visitor is distressed by this refusal, they may like to speak with a staff member.

Visiting hours are timed to allow you to participate in the therapeutic program. If these times are not suitable, please speak with us to make other arrangements.

Visitors need to speak with us before their visit if they plan to bring children under 16 to the unit. Family and child friendly spaces are available. Children must be supervised at all times.

Carers, young carers and families

Connection with family is a very important part of your recovery process.

We ask that visitors use the lockers available in the reception area to store their belongings during their visit.

People under 16 are not allowed in inpatient mental health units. In some circumstances we can arrange for a visit with younger children to take place in another part of the hospital. We will let your visitor know if you are in the High Dependency Unit.

Carers and families can contact each mental health unit using dedicated email addresses to request virtual contact with their loved ones, particularly during periods of restricted visitor access.

Parents and children

We support keeping parents and children connected. We will put the safety and needs of children first. Talk with us about ways you can stay in touch with your children when you are in hospital and how you might best explain to them what has been happening.

There are support services that can work with families where a parent has a mental illness. Talk with a social worker if you’d like more information about these services.

Phone calls

Family and friends are welcome to call the hospital switch board on (02) 5124 0000 between 10am and 8pm (seven days per week). Your loved ones should ask the switchboard to put them through to the unit you are in so they can speak with you and/or our staff.

Support

Support is available for your family members and/or carers during your stay to offer support and links to other services. Please let us know if your family members and/or carers would like to speak with a social worker.
