Position Overview
The Women and Children's Division within North Canberra Hospital provides Maternity, Neonatal & Gynaecology services to women and their families in the ACT. These services include antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care; inpatient and outpatient gynaecology care; neonatal special care nursery support and domiciliary care. Care is provided by a multidisciplinary team including a Midwifery and Nursing Team, Medical staff, and Allied Health.
The Night duty Clinical Midwife Consultant for the Women and Children Division has the professional and operational responsibility and accountability to provide leadership and be responsible for the co-ordination of high standard clinical care activities after hours within Birth Suite, Maternity and Women’s health Unit and Special Care Nursery. The Night duty Clinical Midwife Consultant (Registered Midwife level 3.2) will coordinate the flow of women and babies within the Division and ensure appropriate staffing. The Midwife will have advanced practice knowledge and highly developed clinical leadership and critical thinking skills. Coordinating the acuity, access and safe staffing across the unit. This role liaises with the team leaders of all clinical areas within the Women and Children division, supporting safe staffing and ensuring patient needs are met depending upon their acuity. Collaboration with the multidisciplinary team is a vital function of this role.
Duties
Under limited direction of the Assistant Director of Midwifery you will perform the leadership role of the Woman & Children Division, you will:
- Provide leadership and direction to the team working within the division after hours
- Support the clinical areas- including the Birth Suite, Maternity and Women’s Health Unit and the Special Care Nursery overnight.
- Respond to emergencies in each clinical area and co-ordinate staff in other areas to be able to provide support
- Assist the hospital manager with immediate and future staffing needs
- Be a clinical resource for staff
- Engage in identifying and monitoring individual staff performance
- Collaborate with all members of the multidisciplinary team
- Undertake other duties to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation

Position Requirements / Qualifications
Mandatory
- Unconditional Registration or eligibility to register with Australian Health Practitioners Registration Authority (AHPRA) as a Midwife.
- The successful applicant will work as the Women and Children Night Clinical Midwife Consultant on night shifts.

Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.
Desirable
- Completed or working towards post graduate qualifications in midwifery, management, health service management, business administration or working towards.
- Well-developed, relevant, management experience including conceptual and analytical skills relating to financial, human resource management and reporting.
- Demonstrated commitment to, and understanding of, the principles of quality management, midwifery practice review, policy development and research.
- Demonstrated leadership qualities, behaviour and attitude to professional standards that reflect an understanding of commitment to the organisation’s values.

What you Require (Key Selection Criteria)
These are the key selection criteria for how you will be assessed in conjunction with your resumé and experience.
- Significant recent experience as a Midwife demonstrating competence in advanced midwifery practice, incorporating a risk management approach whilst working within the professional legislation and existing policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated experience in leading a specialised clinical team.
- Well-developed communication skills. Demonstrated high level negotiation skills, problem solving and delegations skills, and the ability to liaise effectively with multi-disciplinary team members.
- Demonstrated commitment to, and understanding of, principles of quality management, midwifery practice review, policy development and research.
- Well-developed computer and information technology skills and familiarity with collection, analysis and reporting of clinical indicators.
- Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful and kind.
