X-ray provides imaging of the body. This helps to determine any health or medical conditions.

About this service

We perform urgent scanning 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for emergency and inpatient (people admitted to hospital) services.

We also provide outpatient services during business hours. You do not need an appointment.

X-rays are also provided as part of North Canberra Hospital’s Medical Imaging service.

Who we care for

We provide imaging of people in:

  • the emergency department
  • inpatients (people who are admitted to hospital)
  • outpatients:
    • people who are only visiting the hospital and have a referral from a doctor.
    • people who have a referral from a doctor, specialist or Walk-in Centre and who can use the Weston Creek Imaging Service because they have been assessed as suitable.

Everyone can access X-ray services.

How to access this service

You do not need an appointment to get an X-ray as an outpatient. If you have a referral for an X-ray you can come to medical imaging reception between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. If you need to call us, our number is (02) 5124 2159.

Or, you can use the Weston Creek Imaging Service located at the Weston Creek Community Health Centre between:

  • 8am – 6pm, seven days a week (excluding public holidays).

What to expect

We prioritise life-threatening emergencies. This can increase wait times for people requiring less urgent imaging.

If you’re an outpatient, you will need to check in at the reception desk – have your referral ready. We will call you in for your X-ray when a room is available. Wait times can vary depending on how many people have turned up for imaging at the same time.

You may have to change into a hospital gown or remove any metal (such as jewellery) depending on the body part to be X-rayed.

What to bring to your appointment

  • Medicare card
  • Any letters or correspondence from your GP
  • Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
  • Private health insurance card (if applicable/if you want to use it).
